Turn on the Light!

I John 1:5-6 “This is the message we have heard from him and declare to you: God is light; in him there is no darkness at all. If we claim to have fellowship with him yet walk in the darkness, we lie and do not live by the truth.”

Have you ever visited a place that has been abandoned, with the windows boarded up so no light could get in? Any place that sits in darkness for a long time seems to attract unwholesome things. Sometimes in the night, lots of nasty little creatures like to come out and play. Cockroaches feast; rats and mice scamper freely. But what do these creatures do when a light is suddenly flicked on? They scurry! They run and hide, for they don’t like the light. They’re afraid of it.

When we live far away from God, we live in darkness. We are quite comfortable with our sin when it’s hidden. But the nearer we draw to God, the brighter His light shines. The brighter His light, the less comfortable we are with our sin. We can’t walk with God and do the things that can only be done in darkness. God cannot, will not allow sin into His presence.

Are we walking in darkness? If we are, we do so by choice. And, as uncomfortable as the bright light may seem after a long time in the darkness, we can still make the choice to walk in His light! For, in light comes freedom from sin, freedom from all the nasty creatures that want to make their homes in the dark corners of our souls.

Dear Father, I want to live in Your light. Thank You for setting me free from the darkness.

Amen
