One Bad Egg

I John 2:21 “I do not write to you because you do not know the truth, but because you do know it and because no lie comes from the truth.”

I’ve always heard you should crack an egg in a bowl by itself before adding it to the others. This way, if it’s bad, the whole batch isn’t ruined. One bad egg in a bowl of good ones contaminates the whole bowl. But one good one does not purify the bad ones!

Whisked eggs

The truth is like those good eggs. It is pure, good, and right. But even one lie contaminates the truth. While you can have a lie with elements of truth in it, there is no such thing as the truth with little bits of lies. The lies will contaminate the truth, making it all a lie.

Because we know the truth – it is clearly written in God’s Word, and made even more clear to us by His Holy Spirit – we will recognize any lie that comes our way. Just as we could easily taste the bad egg in the midst of the good ones, we can easily spot lies in the midst of God’s truth. If we have questions about whether or not something is of God, we can go to His Word, and pray for wisdom and guidance each time. He will lead us to the truth, and help us to toss out anything that will contaminate that truth.

Dear Father, Thank you for giving me Your truth. Please give me the wisdom to separate Your truth from the lies presented to me in this world.
Amen

Amen! Sometimes the lies of this world seem so good, or so harmless. It takes the discernment that comes from the Spirit of Truth to detect them. Lord, help us to hear only Your voice in our heads and hearts so we recognize the lies of this world when we hear them.

i’m struggling with a friend who is seminary trained, pastor’s wife, has taught evangelism classes at the university level . . . and believes that you can mix buddhism with Christianity. yikes! she’s evolved into this worldview through yoga. the enemy is so deceptive in mixing lies with truth.

Hi Jean and Eileen! Yep, if we’re not careful, it’s easy to get caught up in all the feel-good stuff the world wants to feed us. But there’s only one truth, not many truths. Anything contrary to God’s Word is false. Period.

And Eileen, keep it up! I’ll be expecting you tomorrow . . . 😉

I second Jean’s prayer/comment. It’s so nice to have a tried and True measuring stick that we can use; God’s Word never cheats or gives us wrong directions.
