Incomprehensible

Ephesians 3:20 – 21 “Now to him who is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine, according to his power that is at work within us, to him be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus throughout all generations, for ever and ever! Amen.”

Years ago, my husband and I wrote a song together. We were making the four-hour drive between Houston and the small town where Mark was pastoring at the time, and we started trying to describe God. Not an easy task! The chorus of the song goes like this:

Incomprehensible, indescribable,

That’s what You are to me.

You are the Holy One, revealed through Christ, Your Son,

Yet You can be known by one like me.

It is amazing that the Holy God, who is beyond description, whose love and power and abilities have no end in any direction, would take the time to notice me. Me. I’m nobody. But notice me He did, and He hears every word of every prayer I utter.

The funny thing is, because I am so insignificant and He is so great, my prayers often have a lid on them. I pray for what I can imagine. But His storehouse is beyond imagination! I constantly have to remind myself that while I may have an idea of what is best, He is not limited by my human understanding.

Because of my limited ability to describe God, the best I can do is give an example of how God answered a prayer in an immeasurably greater way than I could have imagined.

I wanted another child. I prayed. I begged. I pleaded.

God answered. We received a phone call. A week later a pregnant teenager was living with us. She was a military dependent, and we just happened to live near a military base, so all her medical expenses were covered. A kind lawyer in our church offered to take care of the adoption procedure for us. The girl was my size, and just months before, I had bought a closet full of maternity clothes – before my miscarriage.

God gave us a son. Gave us a son. I was present at his birth. No adoption fees. No medical expenses. Didn’t even have to buy maternity clothes. That experience gave a whole new meaning to Isaiah 9:6, “For to us a child is born, to us a son is given.”

God answered my prayers. He went above and beyond what I could have imagined. And He stands ready, waiting to unleash His never-ending love and power and resources on each and every one of us who asks.

Dear Father, To You be the glory forever and ever!

Amen

    What a beautiful post and tribute to God’s ability to give us over and above what we even ask for.
    I can testify to this so many times in my own life.
    We need not live impoverished lives when we know the Creator of the Universe.
    Over and over in the Old Testament, he rewarded those who thought big, prayed big, and believed big.

    Thank you for your words of encouragement. I am seeking a new job and asking God for certain criteria that I desire. Thank you for reminding me that God is limitless in what He gives and reminding me of how God has done exceeding more than I ever asked or thought in the past.
