I John 3:2b-3 “But we know that when he appears, we shall be like him, for we shall see him as he is. Everyone who has this hope in him purifies himself, just as he is pure.”
Do you remember that old Ivory Soap commercial, advertising it as 100% pure? I do. I can just see that sweet little baby face on the box. Oh, to be that sweet, that innocent, that pure again! Well, according to John, we will be. One day, those of us who belong to Him will become just like Him.
Wow.
As Christians, our goal is to be like Christ. We are each in the process of being made more and more like Him, but this goal will not see completion until we see Christ face to face. That is our great hope, our great motivation – that we will be able to look in the face of our glorious Savior, and that He will see Himself reflected as He looks at us.
We are purified through Christ, through the great sacrifice He made for us on the cross. But we must always work daily to purify ourselves, as well. We must avoid those things that will contaminate us, whether it be an unwholesome television program, or sinful behavior, or negative people. We must seek after those things which will contribute to our purity, such as spending time in God’s Word, with God’s people, and doing God’s work. We rely totally on God’s grace to purify us, but we also do all in our power to remain pure, so that our lives will please God.
Dear Father, Thank you for my great hope – the knowledge that I will one day see Jesus face to face. Please help me to remain pure before You in my actions and my thoughts.
Amen
