1 John 5:14 – 15: Wish List

I John 5:14-15 “This is the confidence we have in approaching God: that if we ask anything according to his will, he hears us. And if we know that he hears us – whatever we ask – we know that we have what we asked of him.”

Wow. This sounds like God is issuing a blank check, doesn’t it? Just think of all the great stuff we can have . . . many of us reading this have already started on our lists! But we must go back and read a little more closely.

Dear Santa

John isn’t saying that God is like Santa Clause, standing by to fill our never-ending wish lists. He says if we ask anything according to His will, he hears us. That changes things a little, doesn’t it?

When we seek to line up our lives with God’s will, we have the assurance that he hears us. When we come to Him with outlandish requests that have nothing to do with His will for our lives, He may or may not listen. But when we seek His will, and ask accordingly, He will always listen! And He will always give us the things that He desires for us to have. We can rest in knowing that He loves us more than we can imagine, and His gifts for us are always good.

Dear Father, Thank You for Your good gifts. Please help me to desire only those things that You desire for me.
Amen
