I John 5:13 “I write these things to you who believe in the name of the Son of God so that you may know that you have eternal life.”
Have you ever doubted your salvation? Sometimes, when we really mess up, we start to question whether or not our relationship with God is real. Sometimes, when we haven’t spent much time with God, when we’ve gone days or weeks or months, or even years, without nourishing that relationship, without talking daily to God and spending time in His Word, we start to wonder.
But John says here that we can KNOW that we have eternal life. He has spent the several previous verses telling us how we can know – by believing that Jesus is God’s Son, sent by God to provide the way of salvation. Do you believe that? Really believe in your heart? If you do, then you have been adopted into God’s family. You have eternal life.
I’d like to add here that eternal life is only one of the benefits of salvation. When we believe, we are given eternal life, and so much more. We should not settle for an assurance of eternal life, for the daily, life-giving benefits of a close relationship with God are indescribable!
When we look at our lives and realize we have neglected our relationships with God, we must do our part to restore that closeness. All we need to do is come to Him and say, “I’m sorry I’ve not talked to You for a while,” and He will welcome us back with open arms. For He has been waiting and watching, my friend, for You to call, for You to contact Him. He loves You so much, and He doesn’t want to wait until Heaven to be close to You. He wants to be an active part of your life. Now.
Dear Father, Thank You for Your gift of eternal life, and for the relationship You want to have with me each and every day of my life.
Amen
