I John 4:14 – 16a: God’s Reliable Love

I John 4:14-16a “And we have seen and testify that the Father has sent his Son to be the Savior of the world. If anyone acknowledges that Jesus is the son of God, God lives in Him and he in God. And so we know and rely on the love God has for us.”

My grandmother’s favorite television show was Matlock. She loved watching Andy Griffith gather evidence for a case, and then try that case in court. His simple, country-boy manner often took the jury by surprise, for he was one cracker-jack lawyer! He often seemed to come up with a reliable eye-witness to give a testimony. Everyone knows that an eye-witness is the most reliable evidence of the truth.

Watching

John is not speaking from hearsay. He saw the Lord Jesus first-hand, in the flesh! John ate with Him, walked with Him, talked with Him, listened to Him teach. He watched Jesus be crucified, and then saw Him alive again, after He was dead! This apostle was a first-hand eye witness to Jesus’ life. He wrote the words we now read so that we could know, as he knew, that Jesus was God’s Son. He was a reliable eye-witness, and he wanted to assure us of God’s reliable love.

Why in the world would God send His only Son to die for a cruel, wicked world? Only because of love. Only because of a love that is so far beyond our comprehension that our minds reel from the thought of it. Such a love goes far beyond anything we can imagine with our human minds! And yet, the very fact of it assures us that God’s love is reliable. A God who would go to such lengths to provide a way of salvation will surely not withdraw His love for any reason. We can know that He loves us, no matter what.

Dear Father, I cannot comprehend the love it took for You to send Your Son, Jesus, to die in my place. Thank You for loving me that much. Thank You for Your reliable, unchanging, never-ending love.
Amen
