Ponderings . . .

ponderings-on-flu-medsMy ponderings today . . . maybe it’s the flu meds . . .

Those of you who know me know I’m extremely pro-life. Years of infertility gave me a stronger-than-average appreciation of the miracles of conception and birth. But you know what? If I’m going to say I’m pro-life, that can’t just be pro-unborn life. I must also be pro-life when it comes to fully-grown people who don’t look like me or act like me or live like I choose to live. ALL life is sacred.

This means, if I profess to be a Christian, I have to love the way God loves. And yes, He adores me in spite of my many flaws, which is awesome . . . but He also adores those who have different flaws. He adores those who don’t agree with my values and belief systems. He adores those who don’t live the way I think they should. Because when it comes to God, it’s really NOT about me. It’s about Him.

If I claim Christ as my example for righteous living, I have to love the way He loves, which includes loving those who hate me. Loving those who fight AGAINST the things I’d be willing to die FOR.

It means I need to go back to God’s definition of LOVE, time and again, and examine myself against that definition. Am I showing patience? Kindness? Humility? Am I putting others’ needs before my own? Am I offering compassion to those who are hurting, even when I don’t understand them? Am I offering wisdom and council without showing judgment?

All this fighting about political things makes my heart hurt. Sappy? Maybe. But I’m pro-LIFE, which means I’m pro-YOUR life, which means I support YOUR right to disagree with me politically. Honestly, I don’t think I care who wins this election nearly as much as I care about the hatred and division in our current climate. And I don’t know how to fix it.

I do know, when I use the Bible as my guidebook for life, I find many examples of how God used ungodly government officials to bring about His purpose. Whoever wins, God still gets to make the calls.

So, there’s that.

I don’t even pretend to know how to fix the animosity and intolerance and injustice in this world. But I know the One who does. And He loves life. All life. Even the lives of those who don’t agree with me.

Going to fall asleep now to some Gilmore Girls reruns . . . <3
